30/365

the rhythm of my footsteps
crossing flatlands to your door
have been silenced forevermore--
the distance is quite simply
much too far for me to row,
it seems farther than ever before
i need you so much closer.

"Be like melting snow -- wash yourself of yourself."

"While I can’t have you, I long for you. I am the kind of person who would miss a train or a plane to meet you for coffee. I’d walk to your town to see you for ten minutes. I’d wait outside all night if I thought you would open the door in the morning. If you call me and say ‘Will you…’ my answer is ‘Yes’, before your sentence is out. I spin worlds where we could be together. I dream you."

"It is so rare in this world to meet a trustworthy person who truly wants to help you, and finding such a person can make you feel warm and safe, even if you are in the middle of a windy valley high up in the mountains." — Lemony Snicket

"For me, trees have always been the most penetrating preachers. I revere them when they live in tribes and families, in forests and groves. And even more I revere them when they stand alone. They are like lonely persons. Not like hermits who have stolen away out of some weakness, but like great, solitary men, like Beethoven and Nietzsche."
- Hermann Hesse

"I can call back the solemn twilight and mystery of the deep woods, the earthy smells, the faint odors of the wild flowers, the sheen of rain-washed foliage, the rattling clatter of drops when the wind shook the trees, the far-off hammering of wood-peckers.."
- Mark Twain

I have a newfound thing for birds and have had the desire to photograph a Cardinal for while now. I was given the chance to walk a little bit of this trail in the town next to mine and was overjoyed to see a Cardinal to photograph. Unfortunately, they are very fast and hard to capture with my little camera. But upon trying to photograph those bad boys, I came across this little guy, hard at work, knocking on anything in sight. He was a beauty indeed and I think now that just because what you wanted didn't happen doesn't mean that something worse will. I am really grateful I was able to shoot (photographly) this very social little guy.

These little wonders. Sometimes the big view of something is the best view but I think that when you take a chance o find the little things, the little wonders that you wouldn't have seen normally, well, then you have a magnificent 'big' view. Sometimes small things make a big picture.

"I felt like lying down by the side of the trail and remembering it all. The woods do that to you, they always look familiar, long lost, like the face of a long-dead relative, like an old dream, like a piece of forgotten song drifting across the water, most of all like golden eternities of past childhood or past manhood and all the living and the dying and the heartbreak that went on a million years ago and the clouds as they pass overhead seem to testify (by their own lonesome familiarity) to this feeling."
— Jack Kerouac

Sometimes solitude isn't so bad. I'm not saying anyone wants to be alone for too long but a nice walk with no one there to distract you from the sounds of the woods or the soft music playing in your ear can be a good thing. Thoughts flowing freely or simply muted by worldly sounds. I ran early in the morning today and there wasn't a soul around and then later on I took a walk to find some overlooked beauty and I couldn't help but be grateful for my times of solitude in the midst of all my conversations and day to day life.

"Better than any argument is to rise at dawn and pick dew-wet red berries in a cup."
— Wendell Berry

Its so difficult to want to go out to take pictures when its so cold outside that your cheeks turn a bright berry red within minutes of contact with the harsh wind. But on I trudge and although it is cold to the point that my finger tips can't detect feeling, I love the chance for fresh, frigid air to fill my lungs for all my many thoughts to finally have a chance to run around freely in my head without the chance of someone stopping them for an answer or a conversation. Its cold and windy but I love it nonetheless.

Project 365

1/365

"But the truth is, it's not the idea, it's never the idea, it's always what you do with it."

(Online journal entry for January 31, 2009)"
— Neil Gaiman

Happy New Year! I am the type of person who has to start things at the beginning of something...the beginning of the week, month or (here we are) year. I started a 365 last year but ended up not being able to finish it for lack of inspiration and motivation. I can't say that this project wont end up being terrible as well but I am willing to try. I have an extra lens and hopefully will be a brand new owner of a wide/macro lens for my iphone which I am hoping will make photos easier when on the go. I figure that the reason that I lose focus so easily is because I am meant to be creative with my work but with photography, you have to have a canvas and sometimes I find myself without a canvas, without a scene or an object to appreciate. On those days I grow inward and I feel as if I shouldn't take photographs anymore and that normally stumps my 365 projects. But I am trying and that's good enough for me.
